Steve Pilgrim achieved a stunning four-timer at Swindon on Monday, from just a handful of runners, to take his tally to 24 wins for the year: a strike rate of 18%.
The meeting got off to a flying start for the Poole-based trainer when Tommy Brock paid no attention to his odds (22-1) to land the first race, an A7 over the 476m. Leading out of the first, Pilgrim’s recently acquired youngster, made no mistake in his first go up in this grade.
Connections didn’t have to wait long for their second win as Mohican Rambo drew first blood to lead around the bend before drawing away down the lane for a convincing 4 length victory in the D4 sprint.
Pilgrim was delighted with Rambo, who he singled out as his outstanding performer of the day. “He seems to have spent more time on the treatment table than on the track in the last 12 months. So to have run a personal best (since we have had him) was brilliant”
Co-Owner Stefan Wells also singled out Rambo for praise. “Has to be Rambo. Patience has been a virtue with him. He is a track favourite. Everyone knows Rambo as he is the largest dog at the track. Today, he was up against the smallest greyhound at the track (Lucy Please – M A Mackemsley), who finished third after showing some good early. I want to say a big thanks to Steve for all his hard work.”
Swift Cockatoo took race 6, nailing Crokers Rocky on the run-in by 3/4 length. It was a special win for Pilgrim, who remarked, “Winning today on her 150th start was special, following up on last weeks win in A9 to land an A8 today was great.”
Silver Gun took the last race of the afternoon to make it four wins for the day. Having joined Pilgrim from trainer Patrick Browne last month, this was her first run representing her new kennel. Pilgrim was delighted to tell me that she had “improved by a full second, since the first of her two trials.”
“I’m delighted, not only for myself, but also for my team who support the setup in many different ways,” said Pilgrim.
“These days don’t happen often. I hope all have enjoyed it.”
